Providers affected

Telehealth providers

Key points

  • The HHS Office for Civil Rights has provided resources to inform providers and patients about telehealth and the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI).
  • Per HHS, these resources will help providers explain to patients the privacy and security risks associated with telehealth services, and how to reduce risks to PHI.

Background

The HHS Office for Civil Rights has issued two resources to inform providers and patients about privacy and security risks associated with telehealth services. They are Educating Patients about Privacy and Security Risks to Protected Health Information when Using Remote Communication Technologies for Telehealth and Telehealth Privacy and Security Tips for Patients. HHS says these trainings will discuss risks to PHI when using remote technology, privacy and security practices of remote communication technology vendors, applicability of civil rights laws, and tips to secure health information such as using encryption and multi-factor authentication.
